We enjoyed dim sum with the Kungs after church on Chinese New Year, and spent a fun evening with the cousins, too. Nai Nai and Ye Ye were here a couple weeks prior so we celebrated with them a bit early. The boys love the red envelopes already--even though they don't know anything about money yet. :)

Let it Snow!

The boys had a wonderful time in the snow. Isaac really enjoyed watching it fall since he's really too little to play in it. During Isaac's naptime, we had some snowball fights with Daddy and built a huge snowman with our neighbors. It was mostly cleared off the streets by the afternoon, so it was the perfect snow. Here for a bit and fun to play in, but gone quickly!

41st Wedding Anniversary!

My parents are celebrating their 41st wedding anniversary next Monday, and we are honoring them with a dinner on Saturday night. (We didn't get our act together last year because Isaac had just been born!) Hopefully it will be a really fun, special time with all our family and friends. My parents started dating when they were 14, so it's actually been a LOT longer than 40 years together. They have really been an example of marriage to us and are still totally in love. I had to include their junior prom picture! :)

Long Time Coming

We've had a busy 6 1/2 months since I last posted. Sadly, Facebook gets much more attention than our family blog. This great lapse in time does not mean I haven't had a lot on my mind as a mommy! I love these active, talkative (yes, both of them!), funny boys more than words can even express. I never dreamed I would enjoy motherhood this much. It is such a privilege to spend every day with these boys who will become men before I know it! They are always making me smile & laugh...but I have my fair share of frustration moments, too. I truly enjoy watching them grow and change. I must say I have a whole new appreciation for my mother who was home with us while Dad worked very hard and long hours...it's very rare that Dennis gets to see the boys before bedtime.
We have had a lot of time with family since I last wrote. Time with grandparents (great-grands for the boys) was especially wonderful. We spent several days at Thanksgiving at my grandparents' house in Otto, NC...they fed us so much good food and took such great care of us. Amazing to feel that from your grandparents in their 90s! I think I was really struck by how full their lives have been, and all that they have lived through together--the Great Depression, WWII, and so on. And to imagine being married for 60+ years! With their great perspective on life comes a sense of humor and thankfulness that really inspires me. We also got to visit Dennis' grandpa in San Francisco, which was special because Isaac is named after him. Watching Dennis look at and interact with Grandpa was very touching--I know Dennis could still see glimpses of the Grandpa he grew up with in the frail man before us. We have a lot to learn from this older generation.

Dennis taught Ethan to say "Happy Independence Day" and it was so adorable. We had a wonderful day in Augusta with family...grandparents, aunts/uncles, cousins, great-grandparents...the boys got plenty of attention! We even made a trip over to the Woodbridge Pool where I spent many summer days growing up. Mom and Dad's church had a service and bar-b-que. It was touching to see my grandfather honored for his service in WWII and to hear all of the patriotic music--really makes me thankful to live in such an amazing country that is worthy of fighting for.

Happy Retirement, Frances!

Frances started working for my family before I was born, and she has always been part of my life. I am thankful for her presence in my life for many reasons. For starters, she provided love that was different from what I received from my parents (she didn't HAVE to love me, yet she did!), she was the most dependable and reliable person I've ever known (she missed 3 days of work in 32 years!), and she tells it like it is. She is truly a part of our family.
As the four "kids" (Catie, Chad, Matt, and I) pondered this big event, it felt like the end of an era. We are officially grown up if Frances is no longer at 3 Pine Hill Ct. on Thursdays! We had a wonderful time last weekend with all of her kids, plus some of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. What a unique opportunity to celebrate Frances! Thank you, Frances, for all the years you spent with us and for making us feel like your own.

Hair Cuts

Isaac needed his first hair cut a bit earlier than Ethan! The two boys had a great time getting trimmed up last week. They look great...always look older to me, which makes me sad...but definitely an improvement!

Sometimes I wonder myself. I try to stimulate my boys as much as possible, keep our house mostly clean, and take care of everyone--including Rocky. Some days I don't know what I've done other than feed and diaper everyone...but most of the time we have some fun activities planned! Whether it's music class, time with the cousins, going to the library, walking around the neighborhood, or running errands with mommy...we have a good time! The pool just opened, so we can add that to our summer repertoire.
Isaac has some new tricks (and so does Ethan--he can now do a somersault!) and we call this his push up time. He loves to look at the world by lifting his own head! We also will spend quality time in our new jogger stroller--my wonderful birthday gift!

We met up with "Uncle" Phil at the NC Zoo on Saturday for a fun visit! We got to catch up while Ethan was fully absorbed in all the animals. This was such a fun time to go, because Ethan is all into naming animals and he really enjoyed getting up close and personal. He loved the chimp (his name was "Hondo") who literally travelled across the containment area to come say hello to a violently waving Ethan. It was a highlight of the day, along with the polar bear that kept diving into the water. :)

Since Ethan was a bit delayed in the first few months because of his prematurity, it's been fun to watch Isaac meet or beat important milestones! He has been laughing, smiling, and making eye contact for weeks. He also has great head control, and even enjoys sitting in the bumbo for short periods of time!
We had a wonderful family trip to the mountains and got to spend some time with Grandpop (happy 92nd!) and Grandmommy (happy bday to you, too!). The boys loved it! (except Dennis--he goes crazy without TV and internet--haha)

Isaac is a very smiley and talkative baby for his age, and it is so much fun! He already makes friends wherever he goes and is a social little man. Auntie Anna was visiting for a few days and Isaac (clearly) enjoyed her company very much!

Almost every time we get out of the car, Ethan says "play basketball". We used to just play in the driveway with Dennis' basketball, but I knew it was time for a kiddy hoop. Dennis' parents gave Ethan one for his birthday, and even though it's still a bit too tall...he LOVES it. We play outside every day, usually with Mommy helping him dunk. :)

I must say, everyone had prepared me for the worst! I had nightmares about a jealous 2 year old and a constantly crying baby...but I am happy to report that it has been smooth sailing (so far!) for the Chen boys. Ethan is a precious older brother who loves to hang out with Isaac. In fact, at bedtime Ethan gets upset if Isaac can't be there for story time & usually Isaac's name is one of the first words out of Ethan's mouth in the morning. Ethan gives Isaac kisses, shows him toys, and helps me hold his bottle. Isaac smiles as soon as he hears Ethan's voice, and clearly enjoys his brother's antics very much. Looks like a match made in heaven...but I always say, so far, so good. I can be thankful for today. :)

My Mixed Race Children

This day and age, we don't ponder this very often. However, as I sat in the birth certificate office last week, the question was clearly raised for me. I made quite an entrance to the waiting room with my huge double stroller, and quickly found a seat. A pleasant young woman next to me asks, "What is he mixed with?" (looking at Ethan) I was totally taken aback by this question, but not offended. I told her my husband is Chinese and she said, "Well, he certainly looks a lot like you!" Then I was confused. But regardless, I must be aware for my children that people will ask questions like this! I need to be thinking about this issue and how to address it with them. One of my friends (a Caucasian who also married a Chinese man) sent me this link to an article which basically says that kids with a biracial identity may be psychologically better off. Enjoy!

Highlights of Isaac's 1st Month

Isaac had a wonderful first month...it's amazing to see how much he has grown already! We had visits from both sets of grandparents and plenty of time with the cousins. We celebrated Dennis' birthday and Chinese New Year, and really just enjoyed having our boys at home with us! (Ethan spent his first 3 weeks of life in the NICU, so it was a treat to bring Isaac straight home!!) Ethan has been a wonderful, helpful, and gentle older brother. (minus the occasional projectiles) We are so grateful that the Lord has entrusted these two little guys to us, and we hope and pray that we can raise them to be godly, fabulous men.

On January 14 at 12:13pm, our family gained another boy! (6 lb 4oz and 20 in) I am officially WAY outnumbered...even Rocky (our dog) is a male. :) Dennis says I'll be eating steak forever. Isaac means "he will laugh" or "laughter", and we hope and pray that we have another happy boy! (so far, so good...he is a very docile babe) His middle name, James, is in honor of Dennis' paternal grandfather. Ethan is adjusting well to his baby brother, and can't wait until they can play together! Of course things are different and we are still adjusting to this new addition, but he has already brought joy, tears, and much love to our lives. Enjoy the pictures of the family!

(I'm getting very close to my no travel window with the pregnancy) We combined our efforts to create a yummy meal--Ethan was a big fan. Dennis and I enjoyed a night out for Lisa's wedding! It was such a joy to see this woman find such a wonderful man to marry--just really sad that he is taking her away to Richmond. Lisa was a counselor at the Barnabas Center (where I work part time) and had a great ministry to women and others there. We had lots of fun celebrating with her!

Fall Festival

We went to the Fall Festival at Windyrush (the pool/tennis club), and Ethan's favorite part was the petting zoo! These animals were so fun and very gentle. I think Ethan was a bit wary, but definitely enjoyed meeting all the animals he reads about in his books!

Trip to NY

Dennis, Ethan, and I made a whirlwind trip to NY a couple weekends ago. I got to see Anna and Marcus, and we all spent great time with Dennis' family on Long Island. We celebrated the one month birthday of Kaitlyn, the newest addition to the family! We ate lots of yummy food and enjoyed seeing family. We even got to celebrate Auntie Alice's Mom's 94th birthday. Ethan had a great time!

Fall in the mountains

Dennis' hours have been much more enjoyable lately, despite the fact that the cause is a bit disturbing. (things at the bank are a little slower these days...) We got to have a weekend in the mountains, and the leaves were gorgeous! Ethan had his 18 month shots on Thursday, so he was a little under the weather with a fever. He really enjoyed the walk we took to the old McClure homestead. Great-Grandpop McClure told us all about his days of walking to school and building the fire in the schoolhouse. It was a fun weekend, and we even got to celebrate Mum and Papi's birthday with a delicious Chinese meal prepared by Dennis and a caramel cake baked by Grand-Martha. Yum!!

Babymoon to Jamaica

Dennis and I went on our first trip (other than one overnight) without Ethan to enjoy some time together before baby boy #2 comes. We had a great time together, and it was perfect timing! It has been crazy in the banking world recently, so we had a wonderful time being away from it all. The resort had plenty for Dennis to do (he is a very good water skiier and I trusted him to take me out on a hobie cat) and plenty of places for me to rest and read. :) Thank you, Mum and Jackson family, for taking such good care of Ethan! It was hard to leave him but we knew he was having a fabulous time without us.

Ethan brought home his first art project from school last week--a pine cone with peanut butter and bird seed on it! Let me just tell you, I would have paid money to see 8 toddlers doing this project together. :) He seems really proud of it, and we hung it together on a tree near the back patio!

Ethan's 1st Trip to the Apple Orchard

Cass' birthday was last Thursday, so we celebrated by taking a field trip to an apple orchard! It was a gorgeous fall day and the kids enjoyed every minute of it. The orchard was on the top of a mountain so the view was amazing. (hence the name, 'Sky Top Orchard' I suppose!) Unfortunately the apples did not make the most amazing applesauce that we were hoping for, but it was still a fun outing!

Every year, the McClure family (since I can remember--seriously) makes the trek to Durham for a Duke football game. Many wonder why we subject ourselves to such punishment, but what lacks in the game is always overcome by Bullock's and fun times with family. It also includes multiple kids dressed up in blue devil outfits that get many comments (compliments to my mother--or Mum to the grandchildren--she handmakes them all). This is the FIRST year since in recent memory that Duke has WON the football game! We beat Navy 41-31. I would say we enjoyed every moment of it, but since it was about 115 degrees and blazing hot...not so much. But, we were certainly very happy for the team! It's a new era for Duke football--we're hoping, at least!

Back in time...trip to Augusta

At the end of August, Ethan and I made a fun trip to Augusta! We said goodbye to Uncle Matty as he headed off to his sophomore year (yikes!) at the University of Georgia. I also got to be with old high school friends--meeting babies and a girls' night! Margaret and I are due just a few days apart in January, so it was fun to talk pregancy. (Not pictured is Elizabeth Hall Eppes, also due next year.) Being with these ladies made me thankful for old friends, and how fun it is to get together and talk for hours like no time has passed. It's a real gift to have these women in my life--I just wish we could hang out more often!

My big boy went to his first day of school, and loved every second of it. (except maybe the part when he fell out of his chair) We visited on Tuesday for open house and so when I took him Wednesday morning he just walked right in...no looking back, no tears, not even a goodbye! I'm really thankful that he enjoys being with other kids and that he's enjoying this experience. He makes it hard for me to be upset. :) His teachers are great and the other children in his class seem sweet. He's going two mornings a week for a few hours--just enough time for Mommy to go to work and do some errands.

Nai Nai's Big Birthday!

We got to go to Michigan last weekend for Dennis' Mom's (Ethan calls her Nai Nai) birthday party. It was really fun to see lots of family and friends, and eat yummy Chinese food. Ethan had a wonderful time--he loves a good party! A highlight was meeting Scotch, Albert and Abby's huge golden doodle. Ethan loves dogs and Uncle Kevin is pretty cool, too. :)

Hilton Head Part 2

Ethan and I went to Hilton Head for a few days with Mum and Papi at the end of July. Ethan had a great time with his uncles Matt and Chad, and Aunt Pam! He loves the sand and enjoyed jumping waves. The beach was a fantastic place for him to try out his new walking skills!

As new Windyrush members, we had a great time at the Fourth of July bike parade. Everyone decorates bikes, scooters, strollers and walks around the block. Usually a firetruck leads the way, but this year it was a little late. Ethan enjoyed the festivities, and so did Rocky! (You'll notice I have a slight pooch in my belly--#2 is on the way! Due January 15, and we are delighted.)

Swim Season

Cass and Martha-Grace were star swimmers on the Windyrush swim team this year. Dennis even made it to a meet! (probably his first since swimming himself in high school) His parents were here for one, too. Cass swam in the 8 and under group, and was up to 4 or 5 events by the end of the season. Ethan and I loved to go cheer on the cousins, but could never stay the whole time because of bed time.

3016 Christopher Avenue

For 60 years, someone in my mom's family has lived in the house on Christopher Avenue in Baltimore, MD. My mom's parents owned it first, and she lived there as a little girl. Then they sold it to my grandmother's brother (my Great Uncle Alvin) and his wife, who have lived there ever since until recently moving to live with my cousins north of the city. My entire life we've gone back to visit Mom's family in Baltimore, and each visit has included special memories (and yummy meals!) in this home. Last weekend we gathered for the final time on Christopher Ave. for brunch and fellowship before a concert honoring my Great Uncle Alvin and his wife Virginia. It was a special weekend, as our extended family came together and shared the different musical gifts we have in a recital at the church where generations of my mother's family attended. There were vocalists, pianists (including little Cass!), violinists, a flute, cello, viola, oboe, trombone...it was quite a mixture of amazing talent! We had a great time capped off with Uncle Alvin singing the first verse of "How Great Thou Art"...it was very touching and a wonderful weekend.

I was a little worried about Ethan's reaction to the beach this year, because he doesn't always like textures and being dirty. Well, these worries were unfounded because he LOVED every minute of it! He loved being covered in sand, eating sand, digging in the sand, throwing sand...and he loved the ocean as well. He would crawl straight in, so we had to watch him carefully! He loved all things beach--putt putt golf, riding bikes (he had a great seat behind daddy!), swimming in the pool, eating lots of food, playing with his cousins. We had a wonderful time as a family! (as you can see by the pictures, Ethan got some serious daddy time!)

Anna and I tried to get some old friends together at Duke for a weekend...and it worked! Over 30 of us (including 6 new kids!) gathered for time in the Duke Gardens, ate some yummy Bullock's together, spent time at the Inazu's beautiful home in Durham, and enjoyed brunch at Foster's. We got to re-visit all our old haunts and have a great time dishing on each other--it was a great time. (and wonderful to meet all the kiddos!)

This month we've already gotten some quality time with Daddy, and look forward to more time at the beach over Memorial Day. We participated in the March for Babies (March of Dimes walk to raise money for prematurity), which was great exercise for a wonderful cause. Dennis and I feel strongly that this is a cause that we will continue to uphold for many years after Ethan's stay in the NICU. We also got to enjoy some fun in the sun at the Porter's house with lots of other babies.

Playgroup Buddies!

We had a visit from NaiNai (Dennis' Mom) one weekend, and the McClure clan (Mum, Papi, Uncle Chad and Aunt Pam) from Augusta the next to help celebrate Ethan's FIRST birthday! He had no idea why everyone was so happy but seemed to have a great time. He loved his first cupcake--Mommy had to take it away because he just kept eating. :) Dennis and I had a wonderful time with all the family and friends who came to help us celebrate this milestone. Looking back over the past year, we have *much* to be thankful for and are so grateful that Ethan is healthy and happy.

Ethan has started to pull up and stand constantly. He loves it! Occasionally he will cruise along things, too. He'll be walking before we know it.

Ethan, all four of his cousins, his aunt, and his mommy all piled in the Acadia for a short road trip to Columbia to visit the zoo. It was a beautiful, warmish day in February and the kids had a great time! (I actually enjoyed myself, too...I haven't been to a zoo in a long time!) Mum drove up from Augusta to meet us, and we had a wonderful day. I love giraffes--hence the picture. :)

Dennis and I realized that our first trip to the McClure cabin (my parents built it when I was 5 years old, so I have lots of memories there) was also our first trip as a new family! We've been together with other family on all our other jaunts, so it was fun to have our first outing. Dennis, Ethan, Rocky, and I packed our new car full of stuff for a quick weekend trip. Thankfully the weather was great and we took several hikes. Ethan is getting to be pretty heavy, though! Rocky absolutely loves being able to run without a leash, and is a great scout dog for us as we hike. It was so restful to be away from cell phones, D's blackberry, internet, and television...Dennis and I enjoyed a fire and a game of Scrabble! We even got to see Ethan's great-grandparents, so it was a fabulous weekend.

Ethan had all kinds of fun on his first Chinese New Year. Dennis and I gave him red envelopes when he woke up--little does he know that Mommy pocketed the money. :) He loved it, though. When Nai Nai and Ye Ye arrived, he had even more red envelopes and a lot of new decorations and goodies. We had several very yummy meals, including one with Aunt Catie, Uncle Kenneth, and all the cousins. Tessa even let Dennis hold her without getting upset! (for some reason, she was wary of Chinese men at first but now lets Dennis play with her) Everyone had a great time--it was quite a treat to have all these celebrations in one weekend!

We had several opportunities to celebrate Dennis' birthday as a family. Dennis and I had a great dinner out at Del Frisco's (which, after a trip to the ER and days of sickness later, was determined to be the cause of a gallbladder attack for me! I have to have my gallbladder removed next month.) on his actual birthday. Dennis' parents came the following weekend, and we celebrated Chinese New Year and his birthday again. Lots of steak and cake for Dennis this year. :)

Dennis really wanted to introduce Ethan to his grandfather, or Ethan's great-grandfather. His health is not the best, so we used the last leg of our Christmas trip to travel to San Francisco for a visit. We visited with other family members, too, in our quick trip out there. Thankfully, Grandpa was awake and in a great mood when we went to see him. It was so neat to see all the generations of Chen men together, and we are so grateful that Ethan got to meet his great-grandfather. The best part was that Grandpa seemed to enjoy Ethan, and the feeling was mutual. Ethan had many smiles for his great-grandfather. :)

As I look back at Christmas, I can't help but wonder, "what were we thinking????" It was a wonderful time, but we had some of the most intense travel that I've ever experienced. And we did it with an 8 1/2 month old and slightly hyper dog. Thankfully, Ethan is a super traveler and was a great sport. It all started on Saturday, December 22 around 7:30pm. (Note: this was after having Catie's 3 kids off and on for two weeks, meeting Tessa, and spending the day with the McClure family to celebrate Christmas) We left Charlotte for Michigan, and drove straight through the night. (Okay, Dennis drove but I couldn't sleep because I was so worried he would get sleepy!) Most importantly, Ethan DID sleep, which is a wonderful thing. Upon our arrival, we took a short nap and then went to the Detroit Lions game. After a great Christmas Eve dinner prepared by Dennis' dad, we woke up on Christmas Day to load the car and drive four hours to Toronto. We spent the next couple days stuffing ourselves with yummy Chinese food, and drove back to Michigan on Thursday. Friday afternoon we got in the car to drive back to Charlotte. We arrived around 3am, unloaded the car and re-packed to get on an 8am flight to San Francisco. We got to visit Dennis' grandfather, who met Ethan for the first time. (more on that later) More yummy Chinese food, and the red-eye home. We arrived about 6:30am and I had just enough time to shower before heading into work at 8:30am Monday morning. In the cracks of all this travel were laughs and good times with Dennis' family, and Ethan enjoyed a fabulous first Christmas. His favorite part was the wrapping paper! While I missed the low-key cozy Christmas of rest (Dennis would probably say BORING :)), I must say we packed a lot into a week and a half. Actually, I know what we were thinking...I just didn't know I would be so tired.

Dennis' group at Wachovia had a Christmas party for all of the kids. One of Dennis' co-workers even showed up as Santa! Ethan had a great time...he really loved Daddy's desk chair. :)

The Newest Cousin--Tessa

Teresa Caplan Jackson was born May 11, 2007 in Jiangxi Province, China. Catie and Kenneth left Charlotte on December 13 and returned on December 22 with Tessa! All of the paperwork went really smoothly and everything is great. She's a tremendous eater, but is still working on sleeping through the night by herself. Extroverted as heck, she's a perfect fit for the Jackson family! Everyone is adjusting very well to this happy new addition. She is one month younger than Ethan (if Ethan had been born on his due date, they would have only been 2 days apart!), and I know they will be fast friends. Right now they just enjoy staring at each other. :)

We had a few very full weeks before Christmas. My sister and brother-in-law FINALLY got to travel to China to pick up their baby girl, Tessa. (they have been going through this process for several years now!) Ethan's cousins got to spend some quality time with us, and with Mum (grandmother McClure). We had a great time! I (Liz) had a bit of an adjustment getting four kids ready to walk out the door instead of one, and meals were always very interesting. I loved it, though, and it was very fun to have all of this activity just before Christmas. As the pictures indicate, we baked cookies, went bowling (with Phil), raked leaves (Dennis loved the free labor! haha), and had a few interesting trips to the grocery store. Let's just say I have a lot more respect for moms with many kids.

Ethan did not enjoy turkey with us, but this picture sure looks like he did! (I promise this was not posed at all--he just happened to lift his shirt and rub his belly) We had a great time in Augusta. Uncle Matty was home from UGA, Chad and his new wife Pam drove over from Thomson, and GrandMartha and Grandpop (Ethan's great-grandparents) dropped by, too! It was a wonderful time with family.

We went to Durham again a couple weekends ago. Dennis went for work recruiting and we got to see some old friends and have some time to walk around campus. Ethan is starting out with strong Duke influences from his parents--can you tell?

Ethan and Mommy also took a quick trip to Augusta last week. It was so fun to see Mum and Papi along with some friends. We also got to have lunch with Uncle Chad and Aunt Pam.

Helmet Update!

Ethan has his first measuring appointment today, and we got to see his amazing progress! He has been going through a major growth spurt--I could tell because he was eating a lot (of mostly mommy-made food...what an adventure!) and growing out of his clothes. This helps because the helmet is made to direct growth--the helmet leaves room for growth on the flat side and is flush with the protruded side. Most of his growth is filling in the flatter side of the head, which is a great thing!

For number crunchers, Ethan started with a cranial vault asymmetry of 13mm before the band and now has one of only 5mm! Cranial vault asymmetry is basically the difference between the measurements of the two diagonals of the skull. His cephalic index (width divided by length) was 93.1% and now it's 86.8%, so he is doing really well. His orthotist said today that Ethan will definitely have the cranial band completely off by Christmas and we'll start tapering before that. I'm so excited! It's so rewarding to see the progress.

Dennis calls Ethan "Scooter" now because he looks like he's ready for a ride with his helmet! After a *very* rough beginning (it was too tight for the first 3 days) and several adjustments, Ethan is a happy boy who barely knows he's wearing his bright blue helmet. I knew it was going to be a difficult time for me as his mommy, but I was very unprepared for how hard it would be for him at first. I had never heard of a helmet making a baby cry like this, and it was heart-wrenching for Dennis and me to try to figure out if he just didn't like it or if it didn't fit correctly. We've gotten the expected stares and lack of eye contact, and I believe I've gotten a taste of what it's like to have a child with a disability. People just don't know what to do, and they don't know what's wrong, so they just look away. Some are great and just smile back at Ethan, which makes my day. I do believe this will be a long three months, but I'm getting used to my sweet boy in his helmet!

Zonked...tired of being a happy fan!

Ethan visited Duke for the first time last weekend for Homecoming! The annual McClure family tradition of enduring a Duke football game (at least the weather is always gorgeous) continues, and Ethan cheered up all of the disgruntled fans with his very own custom-made blue devil outfit from his grandmother Mum. (also a tradition in the McClure family--we all grew up with these little blue capes, horns, and pointy tails!) He really did steal the show and was a very happy mascot.

Ethan smiles all the time--unless he is sleepy or hungry. Even then he usually just whimpers a bit. Rocky (our little fluffy white dog) provides endless entertainment for Ethan, and he even reached out to pet Rocky this week! When Rocky barks, Ethan giggles. When Rocky tries to jump between us (the dog can be a bit jealous!), Ethan thinks it is hilarious. Last week Rocky barked incessantly when I came home without Ethan--he was so confused and concerned about his little friend!

I'm struggling a bit as a mother at the moment. Yesterday Dennis and I decided to move ahead with the cranial band for Ethan. These pictures were taken during his head scan that they will use to fit the helmet perfectly to his head. Basically, Ethan has a pretty severe case of flat head. It's not uncommon with preemies because their skulls are so soft, and it was even worse for Ethan because he had to stay in the hospital so long. His Nai Nai (Grandma Chen) noticed it very early on and we tried repositioning, but to no avail. Basically there is a 13mm difference in the diagonals of his head, and one ear is shifting forward. If we don't treat it, Ethan could have jaw problems, etc...so it's not just a cosmetic thing. So, while I want what is best for Ethan, I'm sad that the next few months will not include kisses on his head and other snuggles. I'm also worried that people will no longer smile and talk to him in public because they won't know what is wrong with him. Hopefully he'll only need it for the minimum time (3 months), but they said it could take up to FIVE MONTHS to fully correct the problem. I don't want my little baby to spend half of his first year of life in a helmet. :( But, at least the helmet will be Duke blue. Go Blue Devils! Maybe people will just think he's an aspiring football star...

Ethan has had a busy month! I (Liz) can't believe he's 5 1/2 months old, but at the same time I can't remember life without him. Tonight when I was giving him a bath I realized my face hurt from smiling with him so much. He is so happy! He's grabbing things (including his own feet!), loves to stand with assistance, and thinks he is such a big boy when he rolls over. He seems to know what he's saying to me when he babbles on and on...

This time Dennis got to join us for 5 days at Hilton Head! It started out very rainy and cloudy, but the last 3 1/2 days were gorgeous. Ethan wasn't a super fan of the tent this time, but he was a trooper. Unfortunately the pool was a bit chilly for our little man. He really enjoyed time with his cousins, aunt, uncle, and grandparents, but mostly his daddy.

Ethan started eating solids (rice cereal and a different veggie or fruit every 3 days) on August 25. He LOVES it--so much so that he doesn't like his afternoon bottle anymore. It's a little messy but he's a fabulous eater. He hasn't totally rejected anything yet! His current faves are carrots and prunes. Yum Yum!!

It has been amazing to watch Ethan grow physically, as well as to see his personality shine. He loves to flirt (he especially likes women, seriously!) and has a killer smile. Dennis is already saying how difficult it will be to discipline him. :) He can hold his head up pretty well now and is definitely trying to roll over. He spends a lot of time kicking and giggling, and makes the most adorable sounds.

At his four month appointment yesterday, Ethan performed very well! Dr. Satterfield said he's just "perfect" and absolutely growing. Ethan (as of yesterday) is 14 lb 4 oz (50%), 15 1/2 inches (75%--who would have guessed that Dennis and I would have a "tall" 4 month old?), and his head circumference is 17 1/4 inches (90%--yes, big head means big brains!).

Sorry for the delay...it's been a busy month!! Ethan has attracted many friends and family to our new home, and we've had a great time!! Ethan and I have also made several trips to Augusta to prepare for Uncle Chad's wedding. We saw the great grandparents in the mountains--Catie, the kids, and I put up 209 ears of corn from the farm! After some major traveling weeks, we are ready to settle in Charlotte for a bit.

Last week was full of traveling and "firsts" for us as a family. Ethan's first 4+ hour car ride alone with mommy, Ethan's first time at the beach, our first pair of flights as a family, and Ethan's first wedding! The first half of the week was spent at Hilton Head with Liz's parents and brother Matthew. The second half took us to Denver for Dennis' brother Albert's wedding. Ethan was an amazing little guy and is a natural traveler! He really enjoyed seeing both sides of the family, and meeting many of Dennis' relatives for the first time. (including the bride and groom--Uncle Albert and Aunt Abby!)

Ethan is FULL of smiles these days...it's such a joy to play with him and just watch him giggle at himself.

For those of you who don't know, Ethan was about one month early! I had an absolutely normal pregnancy with no problems (what a blessing), so when I went in for my 36 week appointment I wasn't expecting anything crazy. I left that appointment with a scheduled c-section for the next morning. After discovering Ethan was breech at the start of the appointment, I proceeded to spend the next four hours on machines--sonograms and fetal monitoring. It was a tad scary, and Dennis was in and out. (he was on a conference call in another room when she told me Ethan was breech and getting his computer when she told me I needed a c-section, but thankfully we found out before his flight that evening to Buffalo!) Turns out that my placenta was no longer functioning properly and Ethan wasn't getting what he needed in the womb. They said he would be better "out than in" even though they suspected he would have to spend some time in the special care nursery.

So...we left the appointment reeling with things to do (we didn't even have any diapers yet, and I hadn't had my baby shower!) before 5am the following morning. I will never forget that night of contacting our workplaces to let them know we'd be out the next day, running to Target to buy baby gear, and having our final meal at Steak and Shake about 10:30pm. We hardly slept...

The c-section went smoothly and we thought Ethan would be fine at first. I got to hold him in recovery until he started grunting. That was a sign that his lungs weren't quite ready, so they whisked him off to the NICU. For the rest of my stay in the hospital, and the next 2 1/2 weeks, I had to go to the hospital nursery to see my son. I couldn't hold him again for days because he was attached to too many machines. It was hard, but it's one of those things that you can handle in the moment. The Lord was very gracious in giving us a neonatologist who was a believer and prayed with us for Ethan. Many things happened in those weeks, but Ethan grew and we got to bring him home on May 3.

The great news is that at Ethan's 2 month appointment last week he was on the normal charts for growth! He is chunking up, as you can see if you compare the photos from the hospital with the more recent ones.

It has been so fun for us to have family around to help us move and figure out how to be parents. I now have a profound appreciation for my parents that was not there before having Ethan. First of all, thank you to my mom for having her third c-section to bring me into the world--whew! Not sure I want to do that again anytime soon. :) Becoming a parent requires so much energy, time, and love. I am so thankful that Dennis and I both have parents that took such great care of us!

Ethan is famous for what I call his "one-eyed Willy" face. He doesn't do it as often as he did during his first couple weeks of life, but I was lucky to catch it when Auntie Catie was here.

He is also a huge fan of stretching--both arms out. I caught that pose today, and popped his collar for an added touch. :)

He's so fun to watch! Every day he has a new face or sound. Dennis and I never tire of watching him. Ethan is normally very awake between 11pm-midnight, so Dennis is normally home to enjoy the show.

Tomorrow we travel to Augusta for the first time to cheer on Uncle Matty as he graduates from Augusta Christian! Can't believe he's going to college!!! Go Dawgs. :)

I thought I would never have a blog. If I didn't have such a cute kid, I wouldn't. :) I started this so that all of my adoring friends could admire Ethan at any time, not just when I send out emails with his newest pictures. Not really.

But seriously...Dennis, Ethan, and I are in the midst of a lot of change! Our family has increased in number by one (that makes four--including Rocky the dog) and we've moved from downtown Charlotte condo living to a house in the burbs. With that comes a lot more room (for which we are thankful) but also wonderful tasks such as mowing the lawn and cleaning the larger space. :)

Anyway, I wanted to do a better job of keeping in touch and getting the latest news out there. So many of our dearest friends and family are far away and hopefully this will help keep everyone in the loop!
